iPad adopted in teaching activities

Author: runsandy

Beginning from the fall semester in 2010, some American universities is going to adopt iPad in teaching activities. Insiders said that it is not only a try to promote educational business with high technology, but may also change the traditional teaching and learning method fundamentally. iPad is a touch-screen tablet PC with 9.7 inch screen and 680 gram. It is easy to be taken. It is one of the e-book that made by iPad company with the function of searching internet, sending and receiving e-mail, reading e-book and playing video or audio, etc.

Since iPad have been appeared on the market, college is also thinking what this small-screen but large-function facility can do for students. It is reported that some universities will adopt iPad in teaching activities. The list includes: American Oklahoma State University, Seton Hall University in Pennsylvania, Reed College, George Fox University, North Carolina State University, etc.

Most of the school which is going to carry out experimental plan will provide a free iPad tablet PC for each student. University of Maryland is also plan to buy a batch of them, put the two-year course of “digital culture and creation” into practice with 60 students to arouse students’ potential of exploiting new technology adequately. Green, the principal of information college item in American Scientific Research Institution, showed great affirmative attitude to the item. He said it is the process of exploring new teaching method; it is a sharing experiment between college and student, textbook publishing industry and e-book manufacturer.

Handy, one of the professors in Oklahoma State University, is in charge of the experimental work. He said their college choosing iPad to assist teaching activities is not to catch the vogue of high technology, but to evaluate whether iPad is good for teaching and learning or not, whether iPad can improve students’ learning, how iPad blends into students’ daily life. At the same time, it is going to verify whether iPad can save the cost of textbook, whether students can blend into commercial society well after graduate. Of course, they are also testing the limitation of iPad in teaching. According their plan, Handy said, they will blend iPad into the whole teaching and learning. Such as, student can buy digital textbook and put the whole book into iPad. It can save about $100 cost, but also it is easy to search internet anytime.

In addition, student can convert video to iPad about their course or the presentation files before their class. Handy said it is easy to load e-book or iPad video without heavy schoolbag. What is more important, students can keep closed contact with their classmates and teachers through IM Platform whether in the class or not.

Of course, there are some persons in the American academic field calling in question about the experimental plan. In the 2010 spring semester, Princeton University and George Washington University’ network got some wrong because of students’ plentifully using iPad. What’s more, students may play any kinds of game or entertainment when using their iPad which will affect their school work. Experts predict that iPad and other kinds of e-book will play an important role in future education. Such as online teaching. In addition, the influence of teaching method will be more obvious, it will fundamentally change the traditional teaching method and structure of textbook.

An Attempt To Simplify Critical Thinking

By Mario Churchill

Any form of training, so long as it is directed towards enhancing the present will always turn out to be a productive means for improvement. And for that matter, critical thinking is one form of training that creates the edge between the achievers and the non-achievers.

Critical thinking, in a nutshell, is the facility by which the mind is receptive towards new ideas. Yet, that doesn’t stop there. Critical thinking goes beyond the acceptance of facts. Instead, this will lead you towards the channels of thinking that would take one piece at a time.

Say, if one concept is proposed on you, you will not accept this concept as it is. With critical thinking, you will take this concept from its general form and transform it into specific issues that create the map towards the bigger picture. This way, you will see flaws and good points and thus, understanding of the general to the specific ideas will be realized.

Critical thinking is a relatively profound idea. But central to this is the ability to discern what is valuable information from not. And from this, one can draw a concrete conclusion that can be applied to the demands of the condition.

Critical thinking itself is a discipline that aims the processing of information through effective and methodological methods, conceptualization and application of the concepts, creating thesis, synthesis and anti-thesis to transform an object of inquiry to its final and well-studied form, evaluation of the information with respect to the source, experience, observation, correct reasoning and data gathered. All these are applied depending on the needs of the certain situation. While these can all be used for a single inquiry, varying conditions don’t often require one to manipulate information and therefore, learn in the process, many problems require the minimal use of the ideas as covered by critical reasoning.

As you might have noticed by now, critical thinking is an interweaving of thinking processes which in themselves are complex grounds to deal with. To complete the process, one must also consider the evaluation of certain precepts, elements of reasoning such as purpose of studying the problem, the problem itself, and the assumptions and the previous concepts as covered by the object at hand. To make things more complicated, one must also integrate concepts that deal with the various forms of thinking which include the scientific method, mathematical reasoning, the moral and ethical concepts and the philosophies that surround the inquiry.

However to simplify critical reasoning, one must have basic knowledge on correct logic because it is basically “logic”. Don’t be deceived though since sometimes, logical reasoning (if used incorrectly and not within the scope of the study of logic itself) may be very manipulative and deceiving.

Critical thinking has two major components:

One is the raw information and the well-established beliefs generated through the intellectual processing skills. The second is the intellectual commitment and the habit itself of thinking with minimal subjectivity and maximum objectivity. As common perception would tell us, critical thinking is not actually the mere gathering and retention of data and information, but should include the process by which this information are found and eventually treated. It is not also the possession of thinking skills alone but the actual application of these skills.

Critical thinking is not thinking alone. It is unique and free flowing but never tied to the primitive concepts of what thinking is. That is- simplistic approach to the processing of information.

How to Solve Problems Using Critical Thinking Skills

This article about teaching critical thinking may not be applicable to every subject we teach. However there is something to learn in every article on education.

How to Solve Problems Using Critical Thinking Skills

Author: klazinaandersen
One of the most important life skills that is not taught in school is critical thinking. This is a very essential skill in life. Critical thinking is a daily habit where we adopt to train our mind to think objectively and intelligently. It is a disciplined form of thinking that trains the mind and the soul to think and act through various situations intelligently, even if we are in the most difficult or challenging situations.

For instance, in the real business situations… one should possess critical thinking to find real solution to various problems that we may have never encountered when we were in school. That is the reason why we should not stop learning after school. What we learn in school is some basic skill on how to think through simple problem. But in a real life situation, this basic thinking is not sufficient to help us to solve problems. We need critical thinking to solve real problems in real life.

The ultimate goal of critical thinking is to make us figure things out. In small businesses, the skill of critical thinking is very essential for start-up entrepreneurs. Considering the business to be relatively small, the organizational structure can be simple and most decisions rely largely on the business owner. Nonetheless, a business owner needs to develop critical thinking in order to effectively apply it in various business situations.

How important is critical thinking in businesses? What impact does it give to the business and its growth? How can entrepreneurs develop the art of logically and rationally making decisions for the good of the business?

How Important is Critical Thinking to a Business?

Entrepreneurs must develop critical thinking to contribute to the growth of business operations even if the business is just a start-up or on a small-scale level. There are reasons to apply critical thinking in your own business:

1.Business problems are solved with logical solutions; not emotions.

2.Business owners can easily identify the benefits and potential issues that the business may encounter.

3.The business grows with lesser assumptions on its operations.

4.Decisions are made intelligently. They are beneficial for the employees and for the growth of the business itself.

5.Business goals are achieved easily and effectively.

You see, all successful entrepreneurs are great critical thinkers. They must possess the ability to think through things calmly, logically and intelligently when they are faced with difficult situations. That is why successful entrepreneurs (or winners) always seem to be able to make the right decisions while losers always seem to make the wrong decisions.

How To Develop Your Critical Thinking Skill:

Here are some tips you can use to develop and hone your critical thinking skill.

Learn How To Identify Assumptions:

Assumptions can ruin your life and your business. The only way to avoid using assumptions as an ultimate solution is to learn how to identify them. When you know how to identify assumptions, you will not use them as final solution, you will use them as a base to identify for facts and evidence.

Asking Critical Thinking Questions

If you are faced with difficult decisions and you are surrounded by various assumptions, start asking critical questions to challenge the assumptions. When you do that, you will be able to identify facts and evidence from assumptions. You can only solve problems effectively if you can identify facts and evidence and use them to solve problems.

Identifying Facts from Fiction

A sufficient amount of information gathered from asking questions must lead to being able to single out facts about a given situation. These facts are necessary in finding practical solutions for a problem.

Always Confirm the Source and Check for Accuracy

Whether it is a fact or fictional information, there is always a source. Always verify with where the information is coming from. Accurate and truthful information contribute to the success of problem solving.

Develop critical thinking and make it part of your habit. If you do that, you will be able to look at problems in life objectively. You are not going to make assumptions and use them to solve important problems. Instead, you use assumptions to uncover facts and truthful evidence. With this skill, you will be able to provide solid solution to any problem both in life and businesses.

School Software: Turn "Down Time" into "Learning Time"

Does your teaching strategy include educational software? This article ought to be of interest to you. It discusses educational software as a way to enhance learning and the classroom atmosphere.

School Software: Turn “Down Time” into “Learning Time”

Author: Sheryl Wood
School software can help teachers and other educators fill down time in the classroom and fill gaps in teaching resources. Educational software can supplement and reinforce classroom learning, but one other function school software can serve is to provide learning fun for classroom down time. Students can use computer games to relax, have fun and learn.

If you have done any research, you will know that the are multiple sources for school software. Where can educators find the best software for their school classroom? There are a few pointers to keep in mind when shopping for educational software.

First, and most importantly, you need to find something that reinforces key concepts that you are teaching. For instance, if you are shopping for math games, look for games that go over the math facts that your grade learns. Even though learning games that are below grade level for students are easier for them to play, skill-level appropriate school software will help them reinforce classroom concepts.

Next, find a software program that is fun, without being distracting. Today’s children are visually oriented, so you want a program with bright graphics, videos, and fun interactive features. When choosing software for the classroom, remember that you don’t want to waste money on school software that is mothing more than a video. If you wanted your students to watch a video, you would have purchased a DVD. Look for a program that strikes a good balance between fun and education.

Additionally, look for a school software program that gives kids the chance to increase and improve their skills. For instance, if you are looking at reading and writing software, make sure that the program you purchase allows the students to advance through several levels. At the beginning they should be reading simple words that would be close to what they were reading at the beginning of the school year. Further levels on the program should help them advance past the level where they are currently reading. In this way, the program not only reinforces but also challenges.

Many computer programs do not require much thinking. Students put in the answer they think is correct. If it is not correct, they are not rewarded. If it is correct, they are rewarded. These programs are great for reinforcement of basic skills. But, providing school software that builds critical thinking and problem solving is a vital addition to a student’s learning. As you are purchasing school software for your school or classroom, try to find several programs that help the children learn how to think. Teaching logical thinking skills can be challenging, but since kids are fans of using the computer, you may find it easier to train their minds with a software program.

School software can also be used as a fun way to encourage students who are struggling with a particular concept. Sometimes sitting and staring at math flashcards becomes tedious and frustrating for these students. Instead, let your student who is struggling to learn his multiplication tables play a math game as a reward for some accomplishment he has made. Students who struggle with classroom concepts can practice those skills, have fun and build confidence.

Educational software cannot replace the classroom teacher, but it can help tremendously with reinforcement of key concepts and providing children with activities during down time. If your classroom has a computer, take some time to shop for the best school software on the market. Your students will thank you!
